About Cockburn Netball Club
Cockburn Netball Club is one of the oldest netball clubs participating in the Fremantle Netball Association league.
The Cockburn Netball Club was formed on the 10th of March 1960 at a meeting held at the Hamilton Hill Primary School. Foundation President Mrs. Margaret Rowe, who with Club Secretary and Treasurer Mrs Nicholls, got the ball rolling.
Tartan was selected as the club uniform. Tunics were the style of the day with fully pleated skirt connected to the top. On rainy days the heavy cotton would absorb the water and make the tunic very heavy.
Cockburn is an original club in the first ‘A’ grade competition which has maintained and steadily increased its membership. The club should be proud to still hold ‘an A1’ position and proud of the future the club has in ‘A1”.
Since the formation of the club there have been many members honoured with life membership and with honour badges. However, the most honoured award is the silver medallion for the 20 years of service, and the Shirley Ranford Award.
The Cockburn Netball Club was affiliated with the then Fremantle Women’s Basketball Association, which is now commonly referred to as Fremantle Netball Association.
We participate in the Fremantle Netball Association League along with other local clubs playing their games at Gibson Park in Fremantle.
The game of netball is a great way to keep fit and, as many members of the Cockburn Netball Club will tell you, it’s also a great way to get involved and meet people within the community and help children as well as seniors get involved in sport which helps build self esteem, community spirit and many long lasting friendships.
